Another Gay Sequel: Gays Gone Wild (2008)

If a movie starts out explaining for 3-4 minutes why all the principle actors have changed, you’re in for a thrill a minute. But what the sequel was truly missing was Graham Norton and his prosthetic pegleg. And that vomit sequence was gross.

Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle (1994)

I can’t get over the praise for Jennifer Jason Leigh in this movie. She is AWFUL. Just because she drawls on in an unintelligible speakeasy drag doesn’t make a performance compelling. It distracts, in fact, until Dot is so drunk that its irrelevant.
I love the Dorothy Parker quote printed on one of the flaps [...]

Spider-Man 3 (2007)

Was there really a demand to see a remake of Batman & Robin? And when are people going to realize that computer animated blobs aren’t very interesting?

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007)

The trailer for this movie made it seem stupid, but in terms of parody it really is step ahead of things like The Naked Gun and Airplane, though not quite as funny as they are. And Zucker invites being shit upon after An American Carol, while I would be more apt to praise the self-loathing [...]

Death Proof (2007)

I had to turn it off. This whole hip meta-movie dialogue thing with a scratchy missing-frame type aesthetic? Okay, but no. Planet Terror did a much better job at reminiscing about this kind of thing. (I turned it off before Kurt Russell even showed up — did he have a monologue about Superman’s clothes?)

Chungking Express (1994)

In my mind, I always get Chungking Express confused with Wong Kar-Wai’s other movie Fallen Angels. I guess it’s a cops and guns kind of conflation, but it doesn’t really matter. Having watched Chungking Express, I am now sure I’d only seen the expired pineapple sequence, having somehow missed entirely Tony Leung’s segment or just [...]

Planet Terror (2007)

People always said this was the good half. Was it because Quentin got a big stick in the eye? Or because his penis dribbled off like goo? Wow. I’ll never be able to unwatch that.

3:10 to Yuma (2007)

What a great movie, with such precise dialogue. I wonder how much it has in common with the Elmore Leonard short story and the 1957 film. Here you have exchanges that always keep the endgame in sight, but always skirt to the side of it. And you also have character changes that turn on moral [...]
